Classical Music in the Congo

Last night’s 60 Minutes had a report on the Orchestre Symphonique Kimbanguiste, a symphony orchestra in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and its struggles to learn and perform classical music in what is currently the poorest country in the world.

It’s a great report, but 60 Minutes is late to the party. A documentary, Kinshasa Symphony (Amazon: Blu-Ray, DVD) came out in 2010; which generated coverage from Der Spiegel and The Economist, among others. Here’s a trailer for Kinshasa Symphony:

Personally I find this very moving. But I’m also curious about the orchestra’s links to and origins in the Kimbanguist Church, a Messianic African initiated church with five million followers. Via Roll Over, Beethoven.
